After Le Depart ‘s departed,
After the crowds have gone,
After the litter’s collected,
Enjoy a tranquil morn!
Celebrate stone in our landscape,
Quarries and crags and walls,
Churches and milestones and privies
At Oakwell Hall!
(and at the Packhorse Gallery!)
To the tune “After the Ball is over” – and a brilliant illustration by Dave Bradbury
I am so impressed with this project and looking forward to the July activities.
Sculptors Melanie Wilks and Dave Bradbury encourage the brickwork students at Kirklees College to have a go at carving stones donated by Marshalls Howley Park Quarry. The finished product, circles and stars, carved in relief, will be used as waymarkers on trails in Dewsbury Country Park.
Our first event is the visit to Shibden Hall this Wednesday, 23rd October. We’re going to try drystone walling and explore our travel history. Let’s hope the weather holds out!
Beyond Graffiti – The Project
With money from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Getty Foundation and other contributors, we’ve set up a project in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, called ‘Beyond Graffiti’ to introduce 140 young people (and the not so young!) to stone and carving in the local landscape (including milestones and other waymarkers) ; this will culminate in exhibitions at Oakwell Hall and the Packhorse Gallery Huddersfield throughout July 2014, themed ‘Milestones and Waymarking‘.
